Car Oil Types

You are probably already aware that about every 5,000 miles or so, you need to bring your Cadillac into the dealership for an oil change. An oil change is a key part of the engine's health and your car's performance. However, getting the right kind of oil for your Cadillac is just as important. There are four primary categories of oil on the market: synthetic, synthetic blend, conventional, and high mileage. The type of motor oil you use is based on a few factors, including your driving habits, the car's engine, the age of its engine, and how hot or cold the temperatures get where you live.

Synthetic Motor Oil

If you drive a performance-oriented car, using synthetic motor oil will improve the vehicle's performance and increase the longevity of its engine. Synthetic motor oil contains molecules of the same size and shape. This creates consistency in the oil and gives your vehicle a predictable performance. Synthetic motor oil is designed for a wide range of engines. It also uses additives, which comprise about 5% - 30% of oil, to enhance the car's performance.

Synthetic Blend Oil

A synthetic blend oil will give you the performance benefits of a full synthetic oil but the cost savings of conventional oil. A synthetic blend of oil is optimal for performance. It can withstand relatively warm or cool temperatures, although a fully synthetic oil is still preferred for drivers who frequently drive in cold winter or hot summer temperatures. Synthetic blend oil also contains some additives for optimal vehicle performance.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is usually used on older vehicles with simpler engine designs. Conventional oil is commonly used on light-duty commercial and passenger trucks. It is ideal for engine health and performance on cars that have relatively low mileage. Conventional motor oil is ideal for drivers who live in moderate climates, as conventional oil doesn't perform as well in excessively hot or cold temperatures.

High Mileage Oil

High mileage oil is designed for vehicles of all kinds that have reached the 75,000-mile mark on their odometers. High mileage oil may also contain additives to improve the lubrication and health of an older car's engine. High mileage oil can also be used as a preventative maintenance tool to help avoid some issues commonly associated with older vehicles, including leaking oil and oil that starts to burn.
