The History of Cadillac

Cadillac defines its history as "twelve decades of trend-setting designs." You'll see that trendsetter mentality in designs like the Escalade SUV, STV car, and LYRIQ electric vehicle. Cadillac's current lineup descends from a luxurious and forward-thinking mindset that's been going strong for over 120 years now.

Cadillac In The Beginning

The Cadillac Automobile Company opened up for business in 1902. That world looked far different than ours today, but one thing was the same: Cadillac automobiles were luxurious and awe-inspiring for the first generation of automobile owners. Their first models were the Tonneau and Runabout, which had about 10 horsepower.

The company was named after the man who founded Detroit in the 1700s. To this day, some Cadillac vehicles are still built in Michigan. From 1930-1950, Cadillac cemented its name as an authority in American luxury automobiles. These intriguing designs followed the times in some ways but also set standards. Cadillac models in those days were known for their liberal use of chrome accenting and also tailfins (starting in the 1940s). In the 70s and 80s, they remained open-minded to new interior technology and design trends. For example, Cadillac models at this time became smaller than their predecessors because that's what buyers wanted in the 70s and 80s. Cadillac didn't disappoint and compromised nobly with models like the DeVille line of sedans and coupes.

The present generation of Cadillac vehicles, spanning from 2000 to today, finds Cadillac capitalizing on the remarkable technology we've enjoyed these past two decades. This design philosophy was simply dubbed "Art and Science" by Cadillac designers. Cadillac's versatility and willingness to change with the times have kept it a brand name that inspires excitement in drivers and pride in ownership. Far from mainstream, Cadillac continues adding luxury to its models and sets the standard in new vehicles, such as electric SUVs. After all these years, when someone says, "I own a Cadillac," that phrase still means something to the listener. It means you've invested in more than just mainstream automobile engineering. Investing in Cadillac means investing in an American automobile company that believes in progress and elegance.
