The Cadillac Lyriq is a luxury SUV from the same people who've defined luxury for the last 100 years. Cadillac knows how important technology is in continuing its push forward in the auto industry. That's why they partnered with start-up Envisics to add something special to the next Cadillac Lyrig: an augmented reality (AR) head-up display. This new development is one of the Lyriq's most exciting over the past few years because it shows just how devoted Lyriq designers are to adding new technologies to the model.
What Exactly is the Lyriq's Augmented Reality Head-Up Display?
We all know what it's like to sit at a computer screen and see text and graphics. This is something right in front of the human eye and something that people consciously look at in order to research or communicate online. However, automakers like Cadillac and start-ups like Envisics dream of a world where text and graphics enter the "natural field of vision" in our real world.
The new augmented reality head-up display will give drivers the ability to look at this informative series of graphics and text without taking their eyes off the road. For Sandy Lipscomb, a senior manager at Ultifi Design, this is all about a "second plane of graphics." The goal is to "further elevate the driving experience in the Lyriq." With a regular head-up display, the goal is to keep vehicle information on the windshield simply. With augmented reality, the graphics are added in a more natural way.
Cadillac expects this new technology to hit Lyriq during the 2024 model year. It will give drivers more information right in front of them, but it won't obstruct their natural field of vision. It's kind of like seeing a map pop up right in front of your eyes just when you need it the most. No prototypes have yet been released, and no official information about what this AR system might share with drivers, but we know that Cadillac is great at implementing new technology like this.
